the story behind the art: This art piece is part of digital abstract series I painted where I gave myself permission to play and not worry about if someone else would like it or if the piece would sell.

I was still numb to the killing of Tyre Nichols, but the emotions started to come through some of the pieces in this series. I subconsciously expressed it through references to other slain Black folks, civil rights leaders, and the general perpetual loss of Black lives. There are a few odes to Basquiat, who died of an overdose. Drugs have been pumped into Black spaces causing epidemics for decades another chain around our necks. This  piece is more playful and fun and remind me to have hope for what’s to come.
